Sjögren's Syndrome
Sjögren's Syndrome is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system
preferentially attacks a person's own moisture producing glands. Common symptoms include
dryness in the mouth and eyes, but the disease can affect other organs as well. The cause is
poorly understood, but thought to involve both genetic and environmental factors. Sjögren's
Syndrome is often present in patients with other autoimmune diseases, including lupus and
rheumatoid arthritis.
Our Goal: To identify and understand genetic factors that contribute
to Sjögren's Syndrome. This research will provide valuable knowledge about Sjögren's Syndrome
that will allow development of better ways to diagnose and treat this common autoimmune
disease.
